This second episode of the season does a good job of addressing some of the concerns I had with the series pilot – namely the overwhelming desire to smack Sherlock (Jonny Lee Miller) upside the head and tell him to settle down and get over himself.
The complex plot twists in “While You Were Sleeping” not only kept me guessing, they also knocked some of the arrogance out of the character making him seem more human. Which makes him somewhat less irritating to the rest of us mere mortals.
We get a tale of inheritance, murder, half-blooded siblings and red herrings, all conspiring to throw the esteemed detective off his game. I find it more enjoyable watching Sherlock struggle with the concept that he could be wrong about the case, than watching him smugly figure out every detail. It may not be classic Holmes, but a more flawed, more human Sherlock works well in this series.
Dr. Joan Watson (Lucy Liu) is nobody’s nanny or side-kick. She doesn’t cater to the petulant whims of the great detective, and the episode brings us some insight into her life before Holmes. How can Watson go from being a surgeon to being a companion for recovering addicts?
“Because I’m good at it.”
The key to success and happiness is in knowing – and understanding – your strengths as well as your weaknesses. I’d say Joan Watson has a lot she can teach the great Sherlock Holmes in this department.
Liu’s work as Watson is outstanding, and it’s still the strongest element of the series. The more Watson stands up and challenges Sherlock’s attitude and expectations, the more interesting he becomes. That’s important, because this series will ultimately succeed or fail based on whether or not we can establish a relationship with these characters, and become invested in what happens to them. It’s difficult to establish a relationship with arrogant perfection.
Which brings me to the one issue I had while watching the episode: There were moments in the first half where it felt like I was watching an episode of House. The writers need to stay as far away from that vibe as possible. House worked (when it did) because Dr. Gregory House served as a flawed parody of the great detective, and Wilson his frustrated sounding board. There are some similarities, but Elementary has a darker, more subtle premise, one that relies on the main characters being far more nuanced and complex than just “Holmes and Watson.”
Miller seems to have a better handle on Holmes in this episode, and he seems a lot more grounded and natural in the way he portrays his many foibles. I’m hoping he continues to find his way with the character, it can’t be easy to try and bring something fresh to a role so well entrenched in the hearts and minds of viewers. I may have had doubts earlier, but I believe Miller is up to the challenge.
It’s the unexpected elements in both the characters and story that will keep viewers interested. While many will have tuned in to the pilot episode to check out the similarities to the Holmes and Watson they’ve come to love, it’s the unique differences and clever adaptation of classic elements that will keep them coming back.

Un po' mi lascia interdetta perchè da quel che si dice in giro è un po un misto tra sherlock e house......e questo già mi dava pensiero,poi ho letto che peter black e fredman sono tra gli scrittori.....e lì ho iniziato a sudare freddo!!!! poi come mi ha fatto notare Giulia alcune volte i due ci han regalato meravigliose puntate all'insegna di Cuddy.......Se Lisa appare nella settima puntata voglio sapere chi la scrive prima per prepararmi psicologicamente,anche se so che lei sarà comunque super........

Ausiello: The show is planning something resembling a two-part episode next month. “Each of the two episodes has its own case, but there’s some connective tissue in the B-story [involving] Joan and her curiosity about Sherlock’s past,” explains exec producer Rob Doherty. “She’s always pressing him for more information in the hopes that it will help her be a better companion to him. But Sherlock is in so many ways a locked vault inside another locked vault. We get into the mythology a little bit more.” And when we come out the other end, their “relationship changes a little in a nice way,” adds the EP. “We deliver them to a new place.”
