.CITAZIONELisa Edelstein Plays House With Her Three Rescue Dogs
If Lisa Edelstein, star of FOX’s Hit TV show, House, was asked the classic question, “what makes a house a home?” her answer would have to be a home filled with the pitter patter of little paws. Actually, the pitter patter of her three beloved dogs; “Sandwich”, “Wolf E.” and “Bumpa”. This accomplished actor has an equal passion for her flourishing career and her devotion to her canines. Edelstein’s pets are as eclectic as the roles she plays.
Sandwich was the first animal to join Edelstein’s family. Sandwich, is a Shepherd mix that was given to Ms. Edelstein by an old roommate who couldn’t keep the dog. Sandwich was unfortunately hit by a car that temporarily prevented the dog from walking. “Sandwich needed to be carried out very carefully in order to go to the bathroom and even then, I had to hold her rear end off the ground while she did her business,” says Edelstein. Sandwich’s condition was very intense for a month, but she eventually pulled through. Miraculously, she progressed and although she has a shortened leg and a reconstructed hip, she was top in her agility class at doggie school.
Edelstein found Wolf E., a golden version of an American Eskimo, after she visited a neighbor to retrieve a borrowed item. Wolf E. literally fell on Edelstein’s feet because of serious existing health problems, including partial paralysis and suspected brain damage. Edelstein asked the neighbor what was wrong with Wolf E., he replied that the dog is just like that and he leaves the dog in the courtyard. Edelstein, with her incurable love of dogs asked if she could take Wolf E. home for the night to be with her, her boyfriend and Sandwich.“We fell in love with him, damage and all. I called the next day to see if we could keep him and the guy gave him up immediately,” says Edelstein.
Wolf E. had seizures anytime he got anxious, excited, happy or scared, and any new environment would send him twitching to the floor and chewing. After putting her dog on several medications that didn’t work, she realized that Wolf E. had an extreme type of a nervous tick. “I weaned him off the drugs and put him on a brief homeopathic program, little by little as his confidence grew, and as his sense of security increased, he slowly relearned how to walk…they just stopped!” proclaims Edelstein.
The third and final dog at Casa de Edelstein is Bumpa, a purebred mutt mix. Bumpa was abandoned and found near Dodger Stadium by people who eventually decided not to keep her anymore. They had a garage sale and Bumpa was one of the free giveaways. “I took her home,” says Edelstein.
“We love to go to off leash parks and run,” says Edelstein, and “they love the beach too.” Bumpa is ball-obsessed, Sandwich loves squeaky stuffed animals, and Wolf E. just loves to be pet behind the ears. “The way we function as a unit when we are on hikes, the way they listen so beautifully, it’s always amazing, always inspiring and always makes me feel great,” explains Edelstein.
Ms. Edelstein volunteers and promotes the fair treatment of animals. She generously devotes her time to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary and their efforts to work with public and humane groups everywhere that actively find animal’s homes and crusade against the homeless animal crisis.
